Using Technology to Further Major Criminal Investigations

This workshop is designed for investigators assigned to investigate major/complex criminal investigations including kidnapping, sexual assault, child exploitation, child abuse, homicide, and human trafficking. The presenter will expand the attendee’s basic knowledge of electronic records obtained by service providers as evidence related to investigations. Digital and electronic records have become one of the most prevalent and ever-changing pieces of evidence pertaining to criminal investigations. The presentation will address the following topics and how each can be used during an investigation. The topics covered include: linking various accounts to criminals; techniques used to obtain location data, reverse location searches (tower dumps/geo-fences), Internet Service Providers (ISP), social media/networking records, voice over internet protocol (VoIP), cloud storage, and search warrant standards pertaining to electronic data records.
