The presentation is a workshop for interviewing sexually exploited persons. It is a trauma-informed and victim-centered presentation that will break down issues related to sex trafficking victims, provide development and planning/structure for how to conduct a successful interview. Attendees will learn tactics and tools to elicit evidence and gain cooperation, detect trauma responses during the interview process, and navigate resistance. The presenter will discuss the trauma experienced by victims, the importance of developing trust, and understanding the effect trauma has on victims, as well as the reactions and triggers they demonstrate during the interview process and while working with them. The issue of multiple interviews will be examined and why it is very common for late disclosure of certain aspects of victimization. Lastly, the issue of self-care for investigators working trafficking cases and the impact these cases have on the individual and their unit will be addressed. The instructor will utilize audience participation and provide case examples, including audio and video recordings and lastly, a glance at what a successful outcome to working these cases looks like.
