Abusive head trauma cases are complex and demand a working knowledge of anatomy, medical terminology, and types of head imaging, in addition to awareness of alternative diagnoses and mimics of abuse. This workshop will review anatomy and definitions, describe the types of injuries seen in abusive head trauma, and discuss the mechanisms that lead to those injuries. Current medical understanding of injury timing and biomechanics of abusive head trauma will be addressed. Cases of abusive head trauma and radiologic images will be used to illustrate different types of injury, and the potential contributions and limitations of the expert medical provider will be highlighted.
Learning Objectives:
Identify anatomy of the head relevant to abusive head trauma
List types of abusive head trauma and radiology studies used to evaluate abusive head trauma and review illustrative cases
Understand the value and limitations of the medical provider related to biomechanics and mimics of abusive head trauma
