Many of the children who come through advocacy centers are in need of trauma-informed therapy services. There is often a waitlist for these therapy services, and we feel that the children just cannot wait. Family Advocate Engagement Sessions were designed for this purpose. They are a non-clinical intervention to keep the family engaged with the center and to ensure that the client has support while waiting for therapy to begin. Engagement sessions can include: teaching coping skills; self-esteem building; increasing positive communication with caregiver; and many other identified needs. This workshop will explore the benefits of engagement sessions in addition to providing structure and materials for other family advocates to implement engagement sessions at their children's advocacy centers.
