With the potential for digital evidence touching every type of investigation, criminals becoming more sophisticated with evidence concealment techniques and state and federal investigators failing to locate key evidence during search warrant executions, the FBI expanded its digital detection and exploitation capabilities by pioneering the training and deployment of an Electronic Device Detection (EDD) canine. The EDD canine enhances law enforcement capabilities in locating and identifying concealed and/or missed electronic devices and enhances the acquisition of digital evidence capabilities in both national security and criminal investigations. The presentation will examine the technical research that went into identifying what the dog is smelling and how the dog is trained to locate these devices. Additionally, real world case examples of the dogs’ successes will be covered and how the use of the dog can benefit any and all investigations.
